Before setting out wall formwork, compare the architectural drawings, structural drawings and detailed aluminum formwork drawings. Architectural drawings define door and window openings, finished wall faces and spatial relationships. Structural drawings define shear walls, concealed columns, coupling beams, boundary elements and structural dimensions. Detailed formwork drawings translate that information into the installation position of every panel. If the three sets are not coordinated, even an accurately snapped line may be based on the wrong design.
Focus on wall thickness, grid relationships, clear opening dimensions, wall-end closures, beam-wall junctions, sunken-slab boundaries, upstand positions, stairwells and lift shafts. Aluminum formwork is a customized system, and panel holes and accessory positions are often fixed during detailing. As a site-management rule, keep wall edge and formwork offset lines separate. A wall edge line alone is easily covered after panel installation. Checking only the panel edge can also obscure the final concrete-wall position. Offset lines should remain continuous and visible at wall ends, corners, door jambs, short wall returns, lift shafts and major external corners.
A practical sequence is: verify the datum, transfer the grid, snap wall lines, locate openings, transfer levels and check the formwork offset lines. First verify floor datum points and control grids to ensure no cumulative error has developed during transfer from below. Next, set out the wall centerline or edge line from the grid, then mark the opposite edge from the design wall thickness. Locate doors, windows, structural openings and embedded-box lines, and finally establish the external formwork offset line as the post-installation reference.
On high-rise residential, hotel and apartment projects with repeated typical floors, crews may simplify checks because the floor below was correct. Fast formwork cycling makes rechecking every floor more important, not less. After setting out, the surveyor, formwork crew and site engineer should verify the lines together rather than leaving interpretation to the installation crew alone.
Wall-thickness control is central to cast-in-place wall quality. Flat ties, through-bolts, pins and wedges, walers and push-pull props all affect thickness and verticality. Do not measure only at one wall end. Spot-check midspan, both sides of openings, corners, T-wall junctions, short wall returns and major external corners.
Before closing the panels, verify that the distance between wall edge lines equals the design thickness. After closure, use the formwork offset lines to back-check the outer panel faces. With a flat-tie system, confirm that the tie specification matches the wall thickness, orientation is consistent, and quantity and spacing follow the panel plan. With a through-tie system, check sleeves, rods, washers and walers against the wall-thickness control requirements.
Door and window openings, bay windows, service shafts, lift-door openings, fire-cabinet recesses and reserved MEP openings are frequent sources of wall setting-out errors. A displaced opening affects not only the formwork but also windows, doors, railings, services and later finishes. Mark the opening centerline, edge lines, elevation and jamb dimensions rather than relying on an approximate plan location.
Wall-end closures also require focused checks. Short wall returns, door jambs, external wall ends and internal or external corners contain many short components and closely spaced holes. Small deviations can produce holes that will not align, out-of-square corner panels or oversized joints. If these locations require repeated adjustment during the first-floor trial, return to the detailed drawings and setting-out records. Cutting panels or enlarging holes is not the recommended solution.
After the wall formwork is installed, the question changes from whether the lines are correct to whether the panels follow them. First check that the panel base sits on the wall edge line, then confirm a consistent distance from the outer panel face to the offset line. Next check that all pins and wedges are installed, walers remain continuous and push-pull props can adjust verticality effectively. Verticality can be verified with a plumb line, straightedge or laser. Major external corners, lift shafts, stairwells and long wall runs need particular attention.
Recheck wall thickness and formwork stability once more before casting. Fresh concrete applies lateral pressure, and incomplete walers, ties or props can allow the wall thickness to increase during the pour. Accurate concrete is not produced by aluminum panels alone; it is the combined result of setting out, closure, reinforcement and concrete-placement control.
